Overcoming the Seduction of Our Imaginations
By nature, we desire what we can see-a nicer car, a bigger house, a dream vacation-but God offers us so much more. He invites us to imagine, with the eyes of our hearts, the surpassingly joyful reality of his life and Kingdom. He wants us to see him in all his glory, and he grows our vision for him when we seek him with all our hearts.
Lael Arrington shows readers that we need a refreshed, renewed imagination for our journey with God. She shares her own story of how God moved her away from escaping into her own small stories and toward living in the reality of his story-from an inward, small-dream life to an outward, Kingdom-building life.
5.0 out of 5 stars Godsight is worth a 2nd look
I fault Lael Arrington's intelligent insight and honesty for making me love this book so much. It challenges the reader to take their faith out of cultural context and to see our lives and our faith through the eyes of God. How do we live with the reality of who we are and the challenges we face and grasp that God is sovereign in the midst? What happens when we begin to view suffering or celebration or achievement or life through a God perspective? I review books every week for Christian Momlogic. Many of them I like, others I read to review, and occasionally I find one that I love and that challenges me to take it deeper. It's a lucky day when that happens. Godsight is one of those books.
it was, what it was.
Taking her cue from C. S. Lewis, Mrs. Arrington posits that "our failure of desire for God and his kingdom naturally flows from a failure of imagination of the splendor and beauty of our rewards, our promised kingdom, and the God who gives them and himself to us as gifts." Part memoir, part meditation, part exhortation, Godsight examines the possible reasons for our lack of imagination and desire, explores avenues for renewing the eyes of our hearts, and encourages us to seek a new, true vision of the kingdom life, beginning in the here and now and culminating at that time when we shall know fully even as we are fully known. This is one of those rare books that is both visually appealing in its physical form and substantive in its content. It acknowledges and affirms our most secret longings, and challenges us to allow God to develop and channel those longings into the perfect plan He has for us, beyond all that we can yet ask or imagine.
