Very few books on dating have stood the test of time like Passion and Purity. Its much-needed message remains strong and hopeful in an age when doing whatever "feels right" is common practice. Using her own life as an example, Elisabeth Elliot guides singles of both genders and of any age on how to put their love lives under the authority of Jesus Christ. Passion and Purity covers dating issues such as: •how to know which person is the right one to marry •loving passionately while remaining sexually pure •the man's and woman's role in relationships •putting God's desires ahead of personal desires •how far is too far, physically This best-selling book now has a new cover, an updated interior design, and a foreword from popular author Joshua Harris. Quest for Love will be redesigned in a similar manner to help readers identify the books as a pair. While Passion and Purity shares the love story of Elisabeth and Jim, Quest for Love is a compilation of stories on how other men and women discovered love through God's direction. Together, these two remarkable books accentuate our need to commit daily to Christ all matters of the heart and to wait on his timing.
I saw Elisabeth Elliot and her daughter speak many years ...
I saw Elisabeth Elliot and her daughter speak many years ago but had never read any of her books. My daughter finished this and asked my opinion of it. It is fabulous! What an encouragement for any season of life! My husband and I are reading it as a devotional and are very blessed! ?
Purity, a forgotten virtue in our world
This is a wonderful book for young women and men who want to live a Christian life and keep themselves pure for their future mate. I would recommend this book to young people before they begin dating. This book will help them to realize what they are doing when they sell their purity cheaply without the commitment of marriage. This book deals, very frankly, with the feeling that a young couple can have for each other, but also deals frankly with the idea of keeping oneself for marriage and a life of true purity and passion within the marriage bed. A commitment that is promised and given to only one person, not passion for a one night fling, but passion for life. A beautiful book!
The strength of this book is that it is personal.
Elisabeth Elliot is best known as the wife of martyred missionary Jim Elliot, as chronicled in her book, Through Gates of Splendor (1957). Christians are still awe struck by her unceasing ministry to the native people responsible for his death. While I have not yet read that work, an error I intend to correct, I have had the pleasure of reading her book Passion and Purity (1984). The subtitle "Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christ's Control" suggest an emotionless book of prescribed behavior to deal with Christian singleness. Passion and Purity is neither cold nor tactical. The strength of this book is that it is personal. At times it reads like great historical fiction as Mrs. Elliot answers the questions of modern single people by opening up the journals and letters of her youth and sharing her courtship with Jim. The Elliot's courtship was intentional, Christ-centered, painful, beautiful and as humanly possible pure. This is not a how to book, but a why to book. The reality is we all know the mechanics of being pure, the challenge is holding onto our convictions in the face of ill-timed passion. I am grateful for the example of the Elliot's. Elisabeth Elliot as an author proves herself to be wholly inspiring, convicting, and absolutely readable. Unwilling to part from her at this time, I have begun to read another of her many books. Single people and those who love single people should visit with Mrs. Elliot and her great God in this book.
A Fantastic Book
I bought this book because my pastor recommended it to me. It is probably one of the most helpful books I have ever read, and one of the few that I plan to read again. I am a young man in my late teens that is considering courtship and marriage for the first time. This book was so helpful and reassuring to me that I recommend that anyone that is considering any type of relationship with the opposite sex should read. I knew about courtship before reading this book but it really solidified my understanding and gave me a great biblical guideline and example. It has taught me how to act appropriately around young women, given me more patience in finding a future spouse, and has also given me some great tools in the selection of a future spouse. Anyone who seeks to be biblical and and obey Christ's will for us in this very difficult process of finding a spouse should read this book. Update: 8 years later and my now boyfriend of two years read this review... He brought it to my attention again and I have to say that the last few years with my wonderful partner have been amazing. We are both furries and I have met so many amazing people. I am happier than I have ever been!
